Pastel drawings from life or from photos on acid free tinted paper. These drawings are produced following a very classical/traditional drawing method, in red pastel/conte (similar to medieval chalk) on tinted paper, with white highlights.

The drawings are timeless utilising many years of experience of drawing the human form.

I draw every drawing freehand - no tracing, no projection. The freshness and life in the result is directly due to the direct drawing method.

Each portrait drawn from life takes 20 - 40 minutes, from a photograph each portrait takes me between 1.5hr and 4hrs. So even if I am doing multiple copies or drawing on smaller sizes of paper, the work involved is the same. At present I am charging the same price for both drawing from life and from a photograph, but I can foresee that in the future the drawings from photographs will increase in price due to the extra time taken.

The size of paper for a single portrait is 32cm wide x 48cm high. If drawing more than one portrait, the paper size is 48cm x 64cm, orientated to suit the group. So far I have drawn a maximum of four people on one sheet - five may be possible, discuss it with me!

Drawings are fixed after drawing, however pastel will never hold up to rough treatment and the drawings need to be framed as soon as possible. It is not suitable to display them in full sunlight, but the materials are of archival quality and are light safe.

PRICE $50 per face drawn (ie one person = $50, 4 people = $200)
Photos preferred for children under 6.
I prefer to take the photographs myself, since the quality of the drawing depends on the quality of the photograph. In particular I require good shadow and highlight areas, and quieter expressions rather than a broad grin work best in a drawing of this style. The subtlety of expression in the eyes and the set of the mouth comes across more clearly in my experience.

But if you have a favorite photograph please bring it along and discuss it with me, I'll give you an opinion on whether it will work or not.
